Cerrejón no longer a Bettercoal Producer

Published on September 9, 2026

As of 27th July, Cerrejón ceased to be a Bettercoal Producer following the conclusion of its participation in the Bettercoal Programme.

Cerrejón first engaged with the Bettercoal Programme in December 2016. Since then, it has conducted a site assessment and engaged with the Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) process, making substantial progress in addressing the identified improvement areas and closing the majority of CIP actions during its participation. We recognise their commitment and willingness to engage with the Programme throughout this process.

Bettercoal Producer status is contingent on active participation in the assessment and assurance process. Where a producer concludes its engagement in the Programme, Bettercoal follows its formal disassociation process, as outlined in its Policy of Association.

Cerrejón informed the Bettercoal Secretariat that due to reduced capacities they are looking to review the various standards they are currently involved with and consolidate their efforts.

The Bettercoal Code 2.0 is an internationally recognised standard for assessing, assuring and supporting continuous improvement in environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance in the coal mining supply chain. Participation in the Bettercoal Programme enables producers to assess their practices against the Bettercoal Code and work towards continuous improvement through the implementation of a Continuous Improvement Plan.
